Honoring Impact as a Nonprofit Organization
“Life’s persistent and most urgent question is ‘what are you doing for others?’” -Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
This Saturday marks National Nonprofit Day, a day with roots dating back to the 1800’s when tax exempt status was granted to charitable organizations. Officially recognized in 2017, this day celebrates the invaluable contributions nonprofits make toward positive social change. Beyond honoring their existence, it provides the chance for us to reflect on how these organizations profoundly impact lives at both community and individual levels.
Why Nonprofits Deserve a Day
Nonprofits fulfill a key role in providing services, goods and resources, specifically to members of at-risk populations. They also reflect within their mission the best of our nation’s highest ideals of service and support for the common good. Filling gaps where public systems fall short, many nonprofits strive to ensure the benefits of liberty and justice can be enjoyed by as many people as possible.
These organizations also offer opportunities to volunteer and contribute meaningfully to the causes we care about, encouraging civic engagement and personal well-being. Despite operating on slim margins, nonprofits often exhibit an entrepreneurial spirit similar to the business world, always innovating to serve with ingenuity and forward thinking.
Branching Out for Better Communities – Our Inaugural Impact Report
Center for Healthy Communities (CHC) will mark this National Nonprofit Day with a very special celebration. As part of our commitment to transparency and impact, we are proud to release our inaugural Impact Report themed “Branching Out for Better Communities.” This report highlights our efforts throughout 2022/23. It showcases our journey from a single health program in 2001 to a statewide presence, serving our local community and beyond in 51 out of 58 counties in California.
Reflecting the collective knowledge and dedication of our team, our work has touched areas such as food security, nutrition consulting, food waste reduction, and community health and professional development. We invite you to explore our year’s worth of accomplishments and learn more about our mission and initiatives in honor of this important day.
How Can You Support Nonprofits Like CHC?
Nonprofits thrive on the support and interest of their communities. Suggestions for supporting a nonprofit near and dear to your heart include;
- Volunteer; many hands make light work and nonprofits often have a volunteer function to help better serve their cause. One suggestions is becoming a food rescuer through our very own 530 Food Rescue Coalition.
- Donate; Visit our donation page to learn which programs you may wish to support, including 530 Food Rescue Coalition, Market Match or our Student Excellence Award. You don’t have to only give money, though surely that is both appreciated and tax deductible! Other suggestions include donating gently worn clothing or goods to shelters or thrift stores like the American Cancer Society Discovery Shop.
- Share; spread the word about a nonprofit organization you love today on social media. Share why you’re passionate about the work they do and how others can help contribute.
